Ryohei Kubota

Ryohei Kubota is a 19 years old handpan player from Japan.
A handpan is a new percussive instrument invented in Switzerland in 2001.

The instrument uses some of the basic physical principle as a steelpan but modified in ordered to be played with hands and fingers.

It has a characteristic sound with multiple overtones.

The sound has a strong resemblance to the one of a gamelan.
Ryohei taught himself and started playing the handpan when he was in highschool.

His street performances on the streets of Tokyo have got a lot of attention and he now has done many collaborations with DJs and different instruments as well as his solo performances.
The soothing music he creats with his hands is remarkable.
